![]() ![]() In the article it is mentioned that most blue animals are believed to be blue for sexual selection purposes. ![]() That is to say that there is in fact an environmental advantage for them to be blue. Very interestingly though, of these different blue tarantulas, some have developed this trait independently at least 8 different times this trait has developed by which they exhibit a blue coloring suggesting that they did so independently and that this blue color trait did not just piggy back on an essential gene that they maintained for some other unrelated reason. It's in this article that I found my answer concerning how these tarantulas exhibit this coloring. That lead me to this National Geographic article about some researchers who were attempting to discover why there are blue tarantulas at all from an evolutionary perspective as there are apparently 8 or so several different species of blue tarantulas. That might not be a question you've thought about before, but because I've already seen this video it got me wondering about the nature of these tarantula's color. If you haven't seen this video there is a really interesting explanation for why the color blue is so rare in nature: Why Is Blue So Rare In Nature I don't know how many people will find this as interesting as I do but here it is: I'm not really that knowledgeable about how many different species of blue tarantulas there are, but decided to do a quick google search and well I'll just copy and paste my comment from back then. The last time a picture of a blue tarantula was posted here I was curious about the nature of the tarantula's coloring because the color blue is already so rare in nature, not just among spiders. The blue is definitely beautiful but you might also find it interesting just how and why it is this color. ![]()
